CANNABINOIDS VS OPIOIDS, WHICH IS MORE EFFECTIVE AT TREATING PAIN?

Image
CANNABINOIDS VS OPIOIDS, WHICH IS MORE EFFECTIVE AT TREATING PAIN? Opioid medication is frequently prescribed as a means of treating pain conditions. However, this family of medications is often associated with addiction, withdrawal, and overdose. It seems that cannabis may serve as a much safer and effective alternative. Opioids are a class of drugs that span from legal pharmaceuticals prescribed to combat chronic pain to illegal substances like heroin. Opioids work by binding to opioid receptors in parts of the body such as the brain and spinal cord. When opioids act on these receptor sites, they work to reduce the signalling of pain messages from the body to the brain. In doing so, sensations of pain are reduced and relieved. For this reason, opioids are commonly prescribed in cases of chronic and constant pain. Several types of opioids include codeine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, methadone, and morphine. Potential side effects of taking opioid medicati...

15 Historical Cannabis Facts  10,000-year History of Marijuana use in the World 8,000+ BCE  Use of hemp cord in pottery identified at ancient village site dating back over 10,000 years, located in the area of modern day Taiwan. Finding hemp use and cultivation in this date range puts it as one of the first and oldest known human agriculture crops. As explained by Richard Hamilton in the 2009  Scientific American  article on sustainable agriculture  "Modern humans emerged some 250,000 years ago, yet agriculture is a fairly recent invention, only about 10,000 years old ... Agriculture is not natural; it is a human invention. It is also the basis of modern civilization."  This point was also touched on by Carl Sagan in 1977 when he proposed the possibility that marijuana may have actually been world's first agricultural crop, leading to the development of civilization itself (see 1977, below). 6,000 BCE  Cannabis seeds and oil used for ...

Boomslang In My Boom (Cannabis) - Very Dangerous Snake In My Cannabis Plant

Image
Full Name: Boomslang ( Dispholidus typus ) Other Names: Tree Snake Classification:  VERY DANGEROUS Map indicating the distribution of the Boomslang ( Dispholidus typus ), within Southern Africa. The Boomslang is largely tree-living but may descend to the ground to bask. In trees it poses no threat to humans as it is extremely reluctant to bite and bites are rare. It is a popular fallacy that being back-fanged it can only bite onto a small digit – this is incorrect as it can open its mouth very wide. Hatchlings and juveniles are grey with a massive emerald green eye but change to the adult colours around 1 m. Most males are bright green, sometimes with black between the scales but in the Cape Provinces they are usually black above with green, yellow or orange sides. Females are brown in colour. Boomslang venom is haemotoxic and compromises the blood clotting mechanism, causing uncontrolled bleeding if not treated. The South African Vaccine Producers manufact...

Cannabis Use in India

Image
Cannabis has been used in Ayurvedic and Indian medicine for at least three thousand years to treat a variety of health conditions, including nausea and wasting syndromes. It is also prescribed for general health and longevity. To this day body builders in India use cannabis as a part of their training regiment to gain muscle mass, promote digestion, and build strength. The spiritual aspects of cannabis are considered so profound in South Asia that many religious groups including Buddhists, Naths, Shaivites and Goddess Worshippers  have incorporated it into meditation practices, as a means to stop the mind and enter into a state of profound stillness, also called Samadhi. Cannabis holds a prominent place among Tantrics in India, Nepal, Sikkim, and Tibet to this day. In the Mahayana tradition of Buddhism, it is said that Buddha subsisted for six years on nothing but hemp seeds. Various spiritual texts, including the Buddhist Tara Tantra, list cannabis as an important a...

South Africa’s Western Cape High Court declared that it is unconstitutional to ban the use of dagga (weed) by adults in private homes. Yesterday, a landmark ruling occurred in South Africa when the Western Cape High Court decided that keeping weed (dagga) illegal is unconstitutional. The decision marks a significant change in the south-African nation, as cannabis has essentially been legalized for private use. Until March 31, 2017, the herb was illegal to grow, own or use under the “Criminal Prohibition of Dagga Act.” The Court deemed the prohibition to be unfair, outdated and discriminatory, however and said that the law disproportionately targeted people of color. As a result, it is now legal for people to possess and use cannabis in their homes, as well as grown their own plants. Lawmakers now have 24 months to update the Drug Trafficking Act and the Medicines Control Act to reflect the recent ruling which is being celebrated by cannabis activists around the ...

Opioid, a substance that produces morphine-like effects, is legally used for medical purposes in America as painkillers.  However, patients become addicted to it to the point that their bodies are already relying on the drug for satisfaction rather than comfort. Luckily, marijuana has entered the scene. Foremost, Americans have been hospitalized due to opioid abuse and overdose. Reportedly, it is now a serious public health issue. Thus, experts thought of one solution: the legalization of marijuana. According to IFL Science, a new study measured the rate of medical cases related to opioid before and after various states have decriminalized cannabis. The results were actually astonishing. Published in the Drug and Alcohol Dependence, the recent research covered the years of 1997 to 2014 from 27 states. It discovered that the number of opioid-related diagnoses fell by 23 percent for every 1,000 patients discharged from a hospital. Also, the number of pa...
